Alignment of the Canal’s 20 kilometres ‘Eastern Section’ between Kiel-Holtenau and Königsförde Siding, which is still in the condition dating from 1914 and a severe bottleneck for shipping.
Construction of a fifth lock chamber and complete refurbishment; as well as upgrade of the existing lock infrastructure in Brunsbüttel.
Just as in Brunsbüttel, a total of four lock chambers are available for shipping in Kiel-Holtenau – again, at least in theory. Also here the two chambers of the ‘Big Locks’ dating from 2014 are the most important ones for commercial shipping.
Deepening of the entire Kiel Canal by one metre in order to adapt it to the increasing ship sizes and thus the demands of today’s sea traffic
