Deepening

Deepening of the entire Kiel Canal by one metre in order to adapt it to the increasing ship sizes and thus the demands of today’s sea traffic

A deepening of the entire Kiel Canal by one metre is essential in order to ensure a significant improvement of the permitted draft of ships. This would increase the allowed maximum draft from 9.5 metres today up to 10.5 metres. Some further measures to improve curves and sidings are under planning and would be realised in the context of the deepening. They are intended to further facilitate the reliability and safety of traffic on the Canal.  Respective preparatory investigations were instituted back in 2009.
